Long Description for Figure 1

This is a "concept map" which has ten small pictures arranged as follows:

At the top of the page is a simple drawing of a sperm whale. Underneath it is a caption with the word "WHALES." From this picture there are two lines with arrows pointing down, each to another picture. The lines with arrows are called "links."

The link on the left is labeled with the words "are not." It points to a picture of a fish (a yellow, tropical-type fish) which is captioned "FISH." So, the map is saying "Whales are not fish."

The link on the right is labeled with the words "are." It points to a small replica of the picture of the whale and is captioned "MAMMALS." So, the map is saying "Whales are mammals."

There are four links coming from the picture called "mammals," and each is labeled "like." They each point to another picture, under "mammals." The pictures are of a cat (captioned "CATS"), a girl (captioned "ME!"), a bear (captioned "BEARS") and a dolphin (captioned "DOLPHINS"). So, the map is saying "Whales are mammals, like cats." "Whales are mammals, like me!" "Whales are mammals, like bears." and "Whales are mammals, like dolphins."

The last part of the map is on the left, under the picture of the FISH. There are three links from the fish going down to three pictures below it. Each link is labeled "like." The pictures are of a shark (captioned SHARKS), a yellow fish (captioned OTHER FISH) and a sting ray (captioned STING RAYS). So, the map is saying "Whales are not fish, like sharks." "Whales are not fish, like other fish." "Whales are not fish, like sting rays."
