Long Description for Figure 2c - The Balance Of Nature, After Instruction

In this concept map the rectangular symbol with "BALANCE OF NATURE" in it is at the top of the map. An arrow goes from this symbol to one below it which is captioned "WEATHER" and shows a rain cloud. The arrow (link) is labeled "RAINY."

From the WEATHER symbol, two arrows go down to two more symbols. The symbol on the left is a picture of a wildflower and is captioned "PLANTS." The link label says "makes more" (to say "Rainy weather makes more plants.") The symbol on the right is a picture of a deciduous tree and is captioned TREES (to say "Rainy weather makes more trees.")

The PLANT and TREE symbols both have links from them down to two more symbols. The one on the left is of a brown songbird and is captioned "BIRDS." The one on the right is of a rabbit and is captioned "ANIMALS." The words on the links are FEED and COVER. So, the map is saying "Plants feed birds." "Plants feed animals." "Trees cover birds. Trees cover animals."

The pictures labeled BIRDS and ANIMALS each have an arrow (link) coming from them to another picture. The link from BIRDS goes to a smaller copy of the bird picture captioned "BABIES." This link is labeled "have more" to say "Birds have more babies." The arrow (link) from the picture of ANIMALS goes to a smaller copy of the rabbit picture captioned "BABIES." The link is labeled "have more" to say "Animals have more babies."

The visual effect of the map is to invite the viewer to see the pictures as a whole, to start at the top, relating BALANCE OF NATURE with WEATHER, PLANTS, TREES, BIRDS, ANIMALS and finally at the bottom, BABIES.
